3M,
which stands for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing,
was founded in 1902 by five Northern Minnesota
businessmen. Although the men had different backgrounds,
each hoped to build a company based on mining
mineral deposits for use in grinding wheel abrasives.
The original company was located on the shores
of Lake Superior in Two Harbors, Minnesota but
it soon became apparent that the mineral deposits
there were not viable and the company was moved
to Duluth and then to St. Paul, the state’s
capital in 1910. The companies first subsidiary
was established in Canada in 1951.
Through a series of inventions and expansions,
3M has grown to include 7 different business
concentrations with companies in over 60 countries.
They produce such regonizable name brands as
3M and Scotch adhesive products, Post-It Notes
and other home and office supplies, and products
for the transportation, health care, industrial,
electronics, and safety industries. Their product
line includes thousands of innovative and unique
items used by millions of people across the globe
in nearly every facet of daily life.
Their abrasives products include an extensive
line of sanding sponges, pads, wheels and sheets
made from aluminum oxides, silicone carbides,
granites and other effective compounds. 3M also
manufacturers air filters, cleaners and a host
of other products for use in woodworking, construction,
