In
1931 Alois Kober established his own locksmith
company in Grosskoetz, Germany. The following
year he earned his master craftsman diploma and
within a few years, the company had expanded
into the vehicle construction and mechanical
engineering fields. Although the company grew
steadily after World War II, the development
of specialized vehicle brakes and related parts
helped ALKO grow by leaps and bounds.
In
the mid 1900s, the company expanded its product
line to include saws and cement mixers and began
opening affiliates overseas. In 1966, the company
began manufacturing lawn mowers. Since that time,
ALKO has expanded its product line, covering
a wide variety of items. Of interst to woodworkers
are the professional level push-pull saw, the
precision circular saw, and the extrator equipment
which helps remove sawdust and other irritants
from the workshop or job area.
These products are sold in the garden and hobby
division, which also includes a line of lawn
mowers, tillers, aerators, trimmers, shredders,
pond and fountain pumps and other lawn and garden
equipment. AL-KO also produces products such
as towing stablilizers and RV chassis through
their vehicle technology division and other types
of ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
Today the company has operations in over 20
countries across the globe including five locations
in the U.S.
