Atlas Copco is a company within the Atlas Copco
Group, a Swedish company headquartered in Stockholm.
Founded in 1873, the company began as a manufacturer
of rolling stocks and other equipment for the
railways. Adjusting to market demands, they moved
into the manufacturing of machine tools at the
turn of the century. In the early years of this
endeavor, they were best know for their drilling
and grinding air tools and compressors.
Through a merger, Atlas Copco also built diesel
engines in the first half of the 1900s, but by
1948 they had sold this aspect of the business
and were focusing solely on the pneumatic tools
and accessories.
The company established its first overseas subsidiary
in Thunder Bay Canada in 1949 where it became
a leader in the mining industry. Today the company,
which now covers three major industries, compressors
and generators, industrial tools, and construction
and mining, has manufacturing facilities in 14
countries and has sales, service and rental operations
in 150 countries.
The compressor aspect of the business is divided
into five different divisions; airtec, gas and
process, oil-free air, industrial air and portable
air, giving customers a comprehensive list of
choices. Products are sold and serviced through
a newtwork of regional offices, compressor centers,
and local distributors.
