The
Swedish tool company known today as Bahco Group
A.B. was created in 1886 when Göran
Fredrik Göransson began manufacturing saws
under the brand "fisk och krok" ("Fish
and Hook"). Another company founder, J.P.
Johansson, invented the pipe wrench in 1888 and
the adjustable wrench in 1892, setting the tone
for a series of patents and innovations in the
tool industry that helped create the company
which was acquired by Berndt August Hjorth in
1890 and later renamed using the first letters
of each of his names.
Through a series of mergers and acquisitions,
the company expanded dramtically over the years,
adding a variety of saws, pliers, bolt cutters,
files, knives, spanners, scissors, pruning tools,
and wood chisels to its product line. Bahco Group
itself was purchased by the tool giant, Snap-on
Inc. of Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1999, however the
company is still headquartered in Stockholm.
Bahco offers four differnt types of chisel and
gouges with over 15 individual models, each made
from hardened steel, with either durable plastic
or fine beechwood handles. The blades are made
to be honed down as needed over the life of the
tools. The company is also known as a leader
in ergonomics research and development and its
Ergo brand includes over 400 tested and approved
tools.
