The
company known today as Bostitch was originally
founded by Thomas Briggs in 1986 under the name
Boston Wire Stitcher Company. Initial production
was based on Briggs’ invention of a new,
easy to use type of wire stitcher used for fastening
hat boxes, books, calendars and other consumer
products. This eventually led to a line of staplers
and the company introduced the first strip staples,
making yet another user friendly innovation to
the industry.
In 1948, the company name was changed to Bostitch,
taken from the first syllables of the words Boston
and stitcher. In 1986 the Stanley Works, the
well-know tool and hardware company founded in
Connecticut in 1843, acquired Bostitch. Stanley-Bostitch
produces their two respective name brands as
well as Hartco and Spenax brands.
The
merger of the two companies created a powerful
tool conglomerate that wields considerable name
recognition and a reputation for being leaders
in the tool industry. Although Bostitch worked
on Browning rifles and other defense related
products during the war, its main focus has always
been fasteners and nailers. Products include
pneumatic staplers and pneumatic
nailers. Bostitch
also makes air
compressors and hand
staplers and tackers.
