The Copeland Corporation was founded in Detroit in 1921 by Edmund Copeland. It has been a subsidiary of Emerson Electric Company since 1986, and has become one of the largest businesses within the conglomerate.

Over its 80-year history, Copeland has made a name for itself as a top producer of compressors, condensing units and electronics for commercial refrigeration and residential and commercial air conditioning applications.

Copeland operates through several business divisions, each focused on a different aspect of the compressor market. Divisions include Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Copeland Europe, and Copeland Asia/Pacific.

Clearly one of the largest and most diverse compressor manufacturers, the company offers more than 10,000 compressor models in a variety of designs including scroll reciprocation and copeland screw compressor designs. Of these designs, the company is best known for its scroll saw development. According to company information, there are more than 18 million Copeland scroll compressors installed in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration systems around the globe.
