The
company known as Delta grew from humble beginnings
in the one-car garage of Milwaukee, Wisconsin
resident Herbert Tautz. Founded in 1919, the
company’s purpose was to design
and build new tools that solved the difficult
challenges of woodworking. Tautz named his business
The Delta Specialty Company.
Tautz’s
inventions over the years helped the company
make a name for itself. Product names such
as “American Boy,” HandiShop,
and the UniSaw represented industry firsts. This
success drew the attention of Rockwell Manufacturing
Company, which purchased the company in 1945
and gave it the cumbersome name, The Delta
Power Tool Division of Rockwell Manufacturing Company.
Delta
was sold again in 1981 to the Pentair Company.
Pentair changed the company’s
name back to Delta and located the headquarters
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1999, Delta
began consolidating its operation with Porter-Cable
Corporation, a sister company, and the entire
operations of the joint venture were moved
to Jackson, Tennessee, where both companies
are now based.
In 2002 the company launched a line of products
for the advanced and professional woodworker
called Delta Industrial, and another line called
Delta ShopMaster, which is intended for the intermediate
and novice woodworker.
In
2004 Black
and Decker announced that it has completed
the purchase of the Tools Group from Pentair,
Inc.
The tool group includes such major woodworking related brand names as Porter-Cable,
Delta, Oldham Saw, DeVilbiss Air Power, and Flex. Price of the entire deal approx.
$775 million in cash according to Black & Decker.
Delta
products range from table saws, band saws,
miter
saws, scroll saws to planer, jointer
up until dust extractors. A perfect range of
woodworking
machinery.
