The
story of the Dremel Company, which was founded
in Racine, Wisconsin in 1932, is a tale of an
amazing inventor named Albert J. Dremel. Although
Dremel had several inventions over the years,
including an electric razor blade sharpener that
was successful as the company’s first product,
it was his Dremel Moto-Tool that truly brought
the company to the world’s attention.
This
small, motorized multipurpose rotary tool is
also known as the "pocket machine shop" and
the "electric Swiss Army knife." It
has proven to be much more versatile than even
Dremel first imagined. It has been used by military
doctors to reduce wound scarring and was later
adapted for use in tattooing. Dentists have used
it for crafting dentures. And the Defense Department
reportedly used the Dremel tool to help create
the first atomic bomb.
Dremel
was acquired by the Emerson company in 1973,
and that group later aligned with the Robert
Bosch Tool Group in the 1990s, bringing the Dremel
product line into the Bosch fold. Most consumers
didn’t notice and went right on thinking
up new ways to use their Dremel tool.
Product models include several rotary tools,
rotary saws, contour sanders, scroll stations
and saws, engravers and a multipurpose tool.
