Emglo was founded in 1957 by schools chums Daniel
Glosser and Milton Friedman. The two had attended
Emory Tech, where Friedman earned a degree in
engineering. He later went on to attend Carnegie
Mellon University. This knowledge of engineering
helped the company start out with a wide range
of products including everything form ski-rope
tow machines to fans and portable heaters.
The
company also offered a
line of Emglo air compressors,
and by the mid-1960s, the demand for this product
outpaced the others and they began to focus their
manufacturing business in this area, making innovative
design improvements. Friedman is credited with
many inventions that helped spur the creation
and popularity of pneumatic power tools.
In 1968 Emglo introduced the first low-profile
wheeled portable compressor that could be taken
to the jobsite. The rental industry saw potential
in the product and began offering it to their
customers, making the use of pneumatic construction
tools the standard on many jobsites.
Other innovations include multiple engine options
for compressors, hand-carry portables and the
first high-pressure wheeled portables. In 1991
Emglo offered the industry's first gas-powered
hand-carry compressors.
In 1996, the company was purchased by Stonewood
Capital, a Pittsburgh-based private venture capital
and management buyout firm. And in December of
2000, Stonewood sold Emglo to DeWalt
Industrial Tool. The company continues to manufacture under
both the DeWalt and Emglo brand names.
