Screw compressor

Is there are difference between the screw compressor and the rotary screw compressor?

The screw compressor was first developed to meet the needs of the construction and mining industries. The first screw compressor was actually made in the 1930’s. The rotary screw compressor is actually the same thing as the screw compressor and is widely used for many different applications.

The most common screw compressor is the single stage compressor. This compressor consists of two rotors inside a casing and the rotors compress the air internally. There are no valves in these rotary screw compressors. The units are cooled with oil, which seals the internal clearances. The single stage rotary screw compressor is easy to maintain and operate.

How the Rotary Screw Compressor Works

The basic element of the rotary screw compressor is the airend, the housing with the enclosed rotor assemblies. The main rotor has a form that fits into grooves called the female or gate rotor. The airend uses a flood of coolant to lubricate seal and cool the compressed air. This is why we get cool air from an air conditioner. When the rotary screw compressor starts, air is drawn into the pockets that are opened between the main rotor lobe and the female rotor grooves located at the intake end of the compressor. As the rotation continues, the leading strip of the main rotor lobe reaches the female rotor grooves and traps the air in the pockets. As the air moves down the female grooves, it is compressed.

Reasons to use rotary screw compressors

Rotary screw compressors are very popular for many reasons. Some of these reasons are:

  • They are designed to provide pulsation free air 24 hours a day.
  • They are able to work continuously.
  • They run quietly.
  • They are energy efficient even when running at full capacity.
  • They do not require a lot of service.
  • They are built to last
  • The air compressed is pure air.

A rotary screw compressor costs a lot of money in electricity to keep it running. However, there have been many advancements in this field, so that now you can purchase an energy efficient screw compressor.
