Affordable used air compressors

Finding an affordable and reliable used air compressor

Used air compressors can be a cost savings for your wood shop

Used air compressors can fit perfectly into your wood shop. If you need compressed air for your air tools, a used air compressor can power your brad nailer, spray booth, or any other air tool just as well as a new air compressor. Best of all, you can often find used compressors for substantially less than you would pay for brand new used air compressor of the exact same model.

Sources for used compressors

One of the first places to look for used air compressors is in your local paper's classified advertisements. Not only will fellow wood workers and hobbyists sometimes sell their used compressors, you can also find auctions of wood working equipment and other tools that have been seized as a result of bankruptcy. Whether a private sale or an auction, the classifieds ads or the Internet can often lead you to some of the best prices on used air compressors. However, the used compressors you get through this method are generally sold "as is," with no warranty protection for the buyer.

Some manufacturers or dealers will sell reconditioned used air compressors. These used compressors have been returned, and have been given a thorough going over by a qualified compressor technician. If you purchase one of these used air compressors, the chances are good that you will receive at least a limited warranty that guarantees you are not being sold damaged goods.

Precautions for buying used compressors

If you are buying a used air compressor online, check to see if the company has a restocking fee if you are forced to return a non-functioning unit. Some unscrupulous tool web sites can charge up to 20 percent restocking fees on returned goods – even if the unit was never operational. You should also make sure to use a form of payment such as credit card which can be traced and reversed if your used air compressor never shows up.

If you are buying used air compressors from a real person, always ask to see the unit in use. However, do not just test it for a minute or two – shut the unit off, depressurize the tank, and then turn it on again to ensure that the machine can handle a start up.

By taking just a few precautions, you can save money and ensure that you receive the best of the market's many used air compressors.
