Cutting Tools overview

You need the right tools for cutting materials

Cutting different kinds of material is relatively simple once you have the proper tools for the job. On construction jobs, cutting is a regular part of the work for fitting in windows, doors and insulation. You can get the job done effectively with the correct tools and of course, the correct use of the tools.

Foam cutting tools include the following:

  • A hot wire bow
  • Jig saw or band saw for cutting blocks
  • Drill

These tools make the cutting much easier, although you may have a bit of spoilage when you first start.

It is now possible for workers to purchase a set of foam cutting machines that are able to do three different jobs - sculpting, hot knife and engraving. All three foam cutting tools come in a sturdy case that is easily carried from place to place.

Cutting plexiglass is easily done with a scrollsaw. The main problem you have with cutting plexiglass is that the plastic may melt and fuse together again as soon as you cut it because of the heat of the blade. In order to prevent this when cutting, you should keep the blade as cool as possible and reduce the friction between the blade and the plexiglass. Some things you can do to reduce the heat of the cutting blade is to put several layers of masking tape under the cutting line of the plexiglass or to lubricate the blade. When cutting plexiglass, you should wear safety goggles as the glass may shatter during cutting and pieces fly toward your face.
