Drywall installation is one of the key skills
in home and commercial construction. It is a
separate trade and often done by contractors
that do nothing but drywall installation and
drywall finishing. Remodelling work and home
restorations also often require drywall installation.
It is
a skilled craft often done by contractors who
specialize in this kind of work. Skilled people
who are members of a trade union perform the
actual work. Drywall installation includes
hanging the sheets of drywall, a layer of plaster
sandwiched between two layers of heavy paper,
on the framed wall. The seams and corners of
this rough wall is then finished off with thin
layers of drywall mud to make the wall smooth
and prepare it for painting or wall covering.
Craftsmen
make drywall installation look easy. These
people have generally received some formal
training through a trade school or a union
training program and then hours of on the job
apprenticeship to learn how to do drywall installation.
Apprentice drywall installers learn tips and
techniques from experienced craftsmen that
are seldom taught in the formal programs. These
tips include the little ‘tricks of the trade’ that
come from experience and are nearly impossible
to quantify in a written lesson. One generation
of craftsmen teach the next generation. The result
is outstanding quality drywall work that is done
quickly and efficiently.
Drywalling
is often taught through community college vocational
training programs, training programs sponsored
by community homebuilder associations and also
in programs sponsored by trade unions. Many
communities also have vocational training centres
to teach people how to do drywall installation.
Drywall installation as a construction craft
that is an integral part of most construction
projects. Good drywall installation makes it
much easier for the finishers to do a quality
wall-covering job. The base for a good looking
construction project, either new construction
or remodelling, is quality drywall installation.
