Improving your basement flooring is a great way to make your basement more liveable. Basement flooring can warm up your cellar by providing an extra layer of insulation between your feet and the hard concrete. Installing new flooring can also beautify your basement and make it a more inviting place to spend your time. Before you rush into purchasing new basement flooring like laminate or hardwood, though, it is a good idea to figure out what is a good floor type for your basement.

Various options of floors

There are several different types of basement flooring products, so as a do it yourselfer you have to ask "What is a good basement flooring product for my home?" The answer will very much depend on your budget and on what you are planning to do in your room. If you have a relatively small renovation budget or are planning to use your cellar as a work space for tools and crafts, a good basement floor sealer like epoxy may be all that is required. These sealers are typically rolled or sprayed on, and prevent moisture from seeping into your concrete flooring.

If you have a little more money available, or are planning to use your basement as living space, you can build a raised subfloor, which will keep you flooring product from getting wet in the event of flooding and will also keep things warmer. If you install a subfloor, be sure to keep any drains clear and use treated lumber to prevent rot, mildew, and fungus.

There are many places where to buy flooring. Hardware superstores are a great choice, as are small flooring retailers. If you are building a subfloor, lumber yards are a great place to find the lumber, screws, and sealant necessary for building a cellar floor. Discount basement flooring is also available from many of the same sources – both large and small flooring retailers sometimes have seconds and flooring which was ordered by contractors but never delivered. You can also find discount basement floors on the Internet from sources like lumber liquidators or others. If you are working with a limited budget, these web sites can be a great source of cheap flooring for your basement.
