Floor
sanding is the other word for refinishing
of floors, which demands time, patience, and
proper tools and techniques. Wood
floor sanding
is either done manually or electrically by special
sanding machines which are most preferred
these days. These rather expensive floor
sanding machines can be easily rented from
your local woodworking or diy store.
Floor
sanding machines
Floor
sanding machines can be devided int two categories:
drum or disc sanders.
Drum sanders carry the sanding paper attached
to a "drum" and
are perfect to level the floor. Giving it a
first sanding work. The other category, disc
sanding machines, use a rotating disc where
the sand paper is attached to. Mostly by velcro
or screwed towards the disc. With its movement
a disc sander can scratch the wood grain, as
it is sanding sometimes against the structure
of the grain. So you need to use it just with
fine sand paper for the finishing touch. Floor
sanding machines especiall drum sanders are
very heavy and one needs to be very careful
while picking the machinery.
Sanding
wood floor with sandpaper may leave scratches
depending on the sandpaper grit.
In the case of coarse grits, scratches can
be easily seen and are very observable however
with fine grit sandpaper, wood floor sanding
is more scratch free as grooves left are too
small to see.
It
is good to start with coarse sandpaper for
removing the imperfections and flaws while
leveling the floor as it results in saving
the time. Scratches caused by coarse sandpaper
while wood floor sanding are further removed
by finer sanding paper. Remaining scratches
after the last sanding should not be conspicuous
therefore use grit 120 to 150 or above paper
to finish the floor.
Until very recently, houses were constructed
with solid wood floors. However with the invention
of carpet the wood floors have lost heir relevance
as they are now only considered as means to hold
and grip the carpet. But easy options like floor
sanding will make you think again to restore
the beauty of your wooden floor.
