Parquet Floors Add Contemporary Elegance

Hardwood parquet a premium floor

Wood parquet flooring and other hardwood floor patterns were once the mainstay of the home construction industry. As linoleum and carpet floor coverings were developed, wood floors faded from popularity. In recent years there has been a resurgence of popularity for wood floors. Parquet flooring is a patented type of floor that consists of a number of small strips of wood making a distinctive pattern. There are three basic floor patterns known as parquet.

Parquet gives a room a certain look of elegance and luxury. These patterns of strips can give a room a contemporary look. They can also give a room the illusion of greater space. Borders and medallions also contribute to the sense of luxury and elegance of the room.

Three Basic Styles Of Parquet

The three main styles of parquet floors are standard or traditional, fontainebleau and herringbone. The standard style is the pattern showing a series of vertical and then horizontal strips forming alternating squares. Herringbone is a pattern of diagonal strips. One of the nice things about this flooring is that it can be produced from a variety of woods. Darker woods are associated with a more traditional look and lighter woods are generally regarded as a more contemporary look. Using one wood for the main floor and using patterns of contrasting woods for borders or other designs can make very distinctive and attractive floors.

The great number of small strips also means there is a greater number of seams. This is not a problem, however, because these seems are sealed against moisture and accumulations of dirt. This sealing also makes hardwood parquet floors very easy to clean and maintain. Over time all hardwood floors, including parquet floors, will become scratched and worn. These floors can be restored to a like-new appearance sanding and resealing.

People who once chose carpets as floor coverings are being delighted by the beauty and durability of parquet. These floors are much more durable than linoleum and certainly hold less dirt than carpet. With all of the new materials now available, hardwood parquet floors are economical as well.
