Vinyl flooring is an attractive, easy and affordable
way to cover floors. Vinyl is a composite material
made up of cork or wood dust and resins with
a high gloss surface. The surface may be either
smooth or textured. Vinyl flooring comes in a
wide array of patterns and designs. It also comes
in two forms to facilitate installation. Full
spread vinyl comes in rolls that are 12 feet
wide. You may also opt for 12 inch by 12 inch
square tiles of vinyl flooring.
How
To Install
Many
do-it-yourselfers are installing
vinyl flooring on their own. It is easy to
learn how to install vinyl flooring. Perhaps
the easiest floor covering to install is the
square tiles of vinyl flooring, especially
the self-adhesive floor tiles. These do not
require any tape or glue and the adhesive on
the back of the tiles have excellent bonding
qualities to most clean floor surfaces.
To install this type of vinyl flooring , scribe
two chalk lines, one from the center of one wall
to the center of the opposite wall. Mark the
other line from the center of a remaining wall
to the center of its opposite. This will give
you the exact center of the room. Peel the back
from the first protective tile and position one
corner in one of the corners of the cross formed
by the chalk line in the room center. Put the
second tile adjacent to the first, using the
horizontal chalk line as a guide. Proceed in
this fashion until the entire floor is covered.
The tiles nearest the walls will likely need
to be trimmed to fit.
Full spread vinyl flooring begins in one corner
and the roll of vinyl is unrolled across the
floor. Many rooms will result in a seam between
two rolls or a roll and a partial roll. There
are a number of books, pamphlets and website
articles with tips on installing vinyl flooring
to help make this a relatively easy task.
