Completing home
improvement projects can increase
the value of your home, beautify your environment,
and enhance the functionality of rooms like your
kitchen, basement, or bathroom. Doing the work
yourself can also give you a tremendous sense
of personal satisfaction. While some projects
are easy, others may require you to seek assistance
from contractors, which can substantially impact
project costs. There are a few ways, however
to keep these costs under control.
Look
for help
One
of the best ways to keep costs down is to do
the work yourself. You may not know how to
do something, however, and so you will need
some home improvement help. A great place to
look for this help is at home improvement centers,
where "how to" tutorials and clinics
are held on a regular basis.
These
informal training sessions, which usually happen
on weekends, teach the do it yourselfer the
intricacies of many different trades. By attending
these sessions you can learn skills ranging
from new and stylish painting strokes to advanced
techniques for installing new cabinets, plumbing
fixtures, or flooring – all for
free.
Negotiating with your home improvement contractor
At the very least, attending these sessions
will allow you to negotiate with your contractor
on a somewhat level playing field, since you
will know a little bit about what that contractor
will be doing. You may also be able to negotiate
for the bare minimums and choose to complete
the finishing touches yourself. For example,
you could ask a cabinet installer for a price
based on simply hanging and balancing the cabinets
and then do the trim work and countertops yourself.
How to keep your home improvement costs under
control
Sometimes the best way to keep your home improvement
costs within your budget is to maintain a sense
of perspective. If you have to take out a substantial
loan to improve your home, you have to ask yourself
whether or not it will be worth it. If you are
fixing up your home for resale, it is a good
idea to check with a real estate agent or appraiser
to see just how much each project will actually
raise your possible sale price. These kind of
questions should be asked before you consider
any home improvement projects.
