overview of laser drilling

Learning to use drilling lasers

Laser drilling is a fast and easy way to drill through a variety of materials including ceramic, rock, sheetrock, and metal. The stronger the drill the harder the material you’ll be able to work with. This is great if you have a job to complete that means drilling through tough material in order to anchor wood or metal piping. Laser drilling is definitely the way to go if you want to expand the type of projects that you’re working on.

Drilling lasers

Drilling lasers can be on the expensive side so be sure that you really need one before you go out and spend a lot of money. If you’re working with tough materials you’ll need to have a drill that lets you get in where you need to so that you can use fasteners or other equipment to complete your job. You’ll want to have a drill that will adjust to whatever it is that you’re drilling and that you can operate smoothly and easily as it rolls and moves along the material. You want to put as little effort into moving the drill as you can so that you can concentrate on precision drilling in the right areas.

Using a laser lets you minimize the amount of employees that you have to use on a job that requires drilling through tough material. It’s those labour costs that will add up and that can put you over budget when you’re trying to stay within cost on a job. Another nice thing about using a laser is that you can bring the laser, if it’s small enough, to the material that you’re cutting instead of manoeuvring the material to the tool. This may seem like a small benefit but is in fact important when you think about all the effort expended on lifting and carrying heavy materials.

Most drills that have a laser will use an integrated system and the laser to find the centre line that you need to use for the drill bit. After the location has been established all you need to do is lock it into the right position and you’re ready to drill. It’s a pinion and rack system that will find the correct location.

The next time you’re working with ceramic or stone material think about cutting the material with laser drilling.
