Moisture meters are used to measure the content of moisture in the wood. Moisture meters are available in all sizes, styles, and prices. You want to pick from moisture meters that meet your needs without exceeding them otherwise you’ll be spending money for more than you need. Wood moisture is measured as the ratio of the weight of the water in a single piece of wood, to the weight of the wood when it is completely dry. This ratio is then expressed as a percentage. A tree that is freshly felled is called “green” wood and may often have a wood moisture content from between 30% to 200%. This wood moisture content will vary depending on the species of the particular tree. Before the tree, or wood, can be used the wood moisture must be almost entirely removed. Wood contracts or expands according to the moisture content and this can cause a lot of damage to your wood. If you have a moisture meter you will be able to measure the wood moisture and thus be able to control the moisture by storing your wood appropriately.
