Using bamboo plywood in your projects is a great
way to save money, and you may just find that
you are making a contribution to saving the environment
as well. There are many schools of thought about
bamboo, but the most prevalent idea about this
wonderful new type of lumber is that it is truly
a sustainable resource, with a much faster regeneration
time than traditional timber. Bamboo also has
a wonderful warm honey color that will add character
to any room or project you choose to use it in.
A look at some of the most important facts about
bamboo as a wood product can help dispel some
myths about this plant.
Bamboo flooring
Bamboo flooring has become very popular in recent
years, in part because of the wonderful color
of this interesting wood. But some people still
cling to a misconception that a bamboo floor
will transform your home into a south sea hut
with a rough textured floor. In fact, bamboo
flooring is made from bamboo veneer, and has
as smooth a surface as any hardwood
flooring product. Bamboo flooring is also very inexpensive,
so in many cases you can do your floors for much
less than it might cost with hardwoods, laminate
flooring, or ceramic tiles.
Bamboo wood
Bamboo wood is manufactured by splitting this
hollow plant and spreading it flat. Because it
is made from a round plant to begin with, bamboo
wood has wonderful shapes and colors in it, and
will include highlights from surface flaws. The
resultant wood is pressed flat, and joined together
with natural, environmentally friendly glues.
To make plywood from bamboo, several layers of
this wood are pressed together.
Can bamboo save the world?
Because bamboo is a fast growing plant it is
much more renewable than traditional softwood
or hardwood trees; for example, a bamboo patch
may regrow in just two to three years, while
a replanted acre of cedar or cherry may take
20 years to be productive again. Because it grows
back so fast bamboo wood is cheaper to harvest,
and these savings are typically passed on to
the person buying bamboo lumber or bamboo plywood.
