using douglas fir lumber

Douglas fir lumber for products

Douglas fir lumber is soft. It is found throughout the northwest. However, it is not a true fir. Nor is it a pine, like the white pine tree, or a spruce. The Douglas fir is its very own distinct species. It is named after the Scottish naturalist who not only found it, but discovered it. Not only is Douglas fir lumber the premier soft lumber, but Douglas fir trees provide the largest amount of soft wood in the United States. Douglas fir trees are more stable than other soft woods, and is nearly as stable in its seasoned state as it is in its green state. In fact, timber from a Douglas fir is often nailed and or put up in its green state, and it seasons after it is built.

The timber from Douglas fir trees can be used to make nearly anything, from furniture to beams for a house. Because it is soft, the timber is easily carved and shaped. This means that it can be made into lovely gifts. Additionally, many products like furniture and cabinets, can have the added beauty of carvings to add an ornate look to any home. Many people also enjoy making large wood sculptures. A large piece of Douglas fir timber can be rawly shaped with a chain saw, and the detailed with finer tools later. These make decorative pieces for outdoors and signs.

Products from the white pine tree

Because the white pine tree is so straight, because its branches do not start until about two thirds up the tree, it is ideal for commercial use. It is very easy to get straight pieces from the white pine tree. This is another soft wooded tree that is easy to work with, especially with traditional carpenter tools. Much of the time, white pine tree timber is considered too soft for complete structural support, but it works well for other functions. Window and door frames, as well as panelling, are great uses for this type of wood. Additionally, white pine lumber makes great shelving.

Soft woods are great for ornamental purposes, and for beautifying the home. Also, if you want a good wood for beams, try Douglas fir lumber.
