Marine
plywood is a special grade of plywood.
Plywood is engineered wood panels made by laminating
odd numbers of thin layers of wood together.
For example, plywood can be made from three,
five or seven layers of wood veneers. The wood
can be of any type and quality. The laminations
are held together by glue. Marine plywood is
specialized to resist the effects of water, mold,
and parasites. The veneer layers are grade A
or B hardwood. Grade A and B woods do not have
knot holes. The wood may be chemically treated
with preservatives and the binding material is
specialized glues or epoxies.
Marine grade plywood is held to certain standards.
The wood is a fully waterproof exterior grade
adhesive. There are no hollow cores in the veneers.
One of the standards is the British standard
of BS 1088. These standards include being made
from untreated tropical hardwood veneers. These
standards tests require that the adhesives are
highly resistant to weather, micro-organisms,
cold and boiling water, steam and dry heat. Among
the woods used are Okoume.
Marine
Plywood For Boats Construction Increase Resale
Value
Marine
plywood for boats is stronger than other types
of plywood. Faster planing boats exert high
levels of bottom pressure to the hull. Marine
plywood is among the strongest wood hull construction
products. Because of the standards to which
it is made, is has uniform engineering standards
which boat builders can use and rely upon.
Most marine plywoods will not check and are
easy to work with. Boats constructed with marine
plywood will have a higher resale value than
boats made with other grades of exterior plywood.
While marine plywood is constructed in much
the same manner as other forms of exterior plywood,
it is made of stronger and more water resistant
materials. Construction techniques are used to
ensure there are no soft or weak spots in the
plywood sheets. The strength of the sheet is
uniform throughout. In other words, this is the
best grade of exterior plywood available. If
you are building a boat or other structure where
you need high quality structural material, you
will be considering marine plywood.
