Plywood
clips are meant to do just what the name implies:
hole plywood in place. They are mostly used
on roof sheathing. When wood blocks wear out
or fall off, a clip can be used to replace
the block. This, of course, only works if the
roofing of one’s house is, in fact, plywood.
Plywood graded and stamped for exterior use can
be used on roofs. This is high grade plywood
that is expected to not swell and then begin
breaking down when exposed to water. It is supposed
to be hard enough that water is not absorbed
into it. Clips are mainly made of metals. They
are made for easy installation, and are often
easier to install than wood block. The purpose
of wood blocks and/or clips is to maintain a
one-eighth of an inch gap between the roof boards.
The gap prevents a buckled or wavy appearance
to the rood. By using plywood clips, the job
of roof repair can be a little easier.
Plywood hurricane clips to protect windows
Clips are not just for roofs. They can also
be used to hold plywood or particleboard in place
over windows during a storm. The reason plywood
or particle board is placed over windows is to
prevent breakage. Not only does it keep the glass
from being shattered by flying objects, it helps
maintain the structural integrity of the house.
A windowless house allows wind to invade the
house and lift the roof from below. Plywood hurricane
clips are designed to securely hold the plywood
in a recess, such as a window casing or a door
jamb. They are also designed to allow for tension
to pass from the plywood into the clip. For instance,
wind blowing hard up against plywood will hold
it against the house, protection windows from
flying objects that may break them. However,
stress is placed on plywood when wind blows across
it, creating lift and potentially ripping it
out of its place. Plywood hurricane clips allow
slight movements in the board, relieving the
tension and transferring it to the clips.
A
person can repair one’s home or preserve
its structural integrity by the use of plywood
clips.
