plywood hurricane shutters for protection

Plywood hurricane shutters can provide safety

Storm shutters made from plywood

Plywood hurricane shutters can provide needed protection, but not cost as much as buying some other types of storm shutters. All one needs is to purchase a plywood sheet, or two, depending on the size of the home, and cut it in sizes to fit over the windows. With the use of a hurricane clip, to hold each piece in place in the window casings, these makeshift storm shutters are an easy do it yourself way to add to your emergency preparedness. And it does not have to cost very much at all.

When one lives in a state prone to strong storms, one finds that some companies gouge when it comes to storm shutters. And shutters are a necessity when a hurricane hits. This is because when windows are broken, the air rushes in to the house, causes a massive lift in the air pressure. The roof of the house can then be lifted straight up and off of the house, further compromising structural integrity. But outfitting an entire home with storm shutters can be an expensive proposition. However, by buying a sheet of exterior plywood, one can make his or her own plywood hurricane shutters with a little time.

Exterior plywood: perfect for shutters

Exterior plywood is great for shutters of this nature. There are different grades of plywood, rated for outdoor use or indoor use. Exterior plywood is generally heavier and can be used for things like walls and roofs. Plywood not rated for outdoor use can be used for plywood shelving and sometimes other fixtures in the home. Low grade plywood absorbs moisture and become easily warped. This is why plywood shelving sometimes acquires a saggy appearance, even though there may not be a lot of weight on the shelves. While low grade plywood is okay for storm shutters, exterior plywood is superior because it is more water repellent and less like to begin breaking down.

After you decide to make your own shutters, it is important to begin making them immediately. That way they will be ready when the hurricane warnings come. If you have the piece of plywood and the hurricane clips ready, and stored in an easy to get to place, then you can quickly make the modifications to protect your home with your own plywood hurricane shutters.
