Uses of pressure treated lumber

Pressure treated lumber and health risks

Why pressure treated lumber is hazardous?

Pressure treated lumber is a specialized greenish color wood which is treated with special preservatives to make it last longer. The specially designed lumber effectively counters the attack of fungus, insects and moistures and guarantees a much better life in comparison to other woods. The whole process of pressure treated lumber is very interesting starting with making minute cuts in the piece of lumber, which is then put in a specialized cylinder. Inside the cylinder pressure is created to suck moisture from the piece and then the powerful pressure pushes the whole moisture to concentrate in the first centimeter of the wood. Finally the piece is dried naturally under the heat of sunlight.

The resistance capacity of pressure treated lumber increases five times in comparison to the normal wood due to preservatives used to get its productive life increased.

Pressure Treated Lumber Health Risk

Two known chemicals arsenic and chromium are used to treat the pressure treated lumber. Arsenic is hazardous to the body because if the poisonous substance contained in it enters into the body it causes cancer or skin irritation. Similarly chromium copper arsenate has negative effects on the body if remain exposed for long. Thus chromium copper arsenate in the wood leads to an irritation of skin and moreover with both the chemicals having an ability to get absorbed in the surrounding soil prove further hazardous to the user.

These days pressure treated lumber is extensively used in making school furniture like school desks, fences etc that prove very hazardous for school children and adults. In the early nineties it has been revealed by the government studies that in comparison to concrete wood people working exclusively on pressure treated lumber suffer more from dermatitis. Continuous exposure to these metals cause diseases like carcinogenic irritation, damaged liver, digestive problems, breathing problems and even chromosome damage in men and women. Thus the pressure treated lumber along with long durability brings many hazardous diseases making an extensive use of the lumber think again.
