use an effective dust mask

Use a dust mask

Sawdust masks are important in the workshop

Using a dust mask is the most basic way to avoid breathing in the large amounts of dust produced by your projects, whether you are using your router or simply sanding drywall patches before painting. Wearing a disposable mask can also protect you from many different chemicals that are released, such the urea formaldehyde used to bind MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) together. While a dust collection system is definitely the preferred option in a woodshop with several machines, buying disposable masks is an inexpensive way for do it yourselfers to ensure they breath safe, clean air when they are doing work around the house.

Paper filter masks: the low-cost approach

Buying paper filter masks in bulk is a great way to ensure that you will always be ready to work, no matter how dusty and dirty the job may be. Paper filter masks are good for a variety of different jobs. If you are doing yard work, paper filter masks can prevent dust and pollen from irritating your allergies; this can make your spring yard cleanup a joy rather than an ordeal if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

Paper filter masks are also very good at keeping mould from irritating your allergies if you are cleaning a wet basement or your garage. If you have to sand drywall or wood a paper filter mask can keep you from sneezing on the fine dust, allowing you to work faster. These masks are also a must if you are working with materials that give off dangerous particles, such as fibreglass or many manufactured lumber products like MDF or OSB.

Using sawdust masks when you are working with wood

Many studies have shown that sawdust can seriously irritate your nasal passages, and may even be a contributing cause of cancer. Sawdust is a foreign element to your lungs and throat, and your body is not equipped to remove these fine particles from your system.

The proper use of sawdust masks whenever you are sanding or cutting wood can prevent sawdust from building up inside your body, and can protect you from experiencing difficulty breathing or developing more serious breathing conditions. Because of the many dangers associated with common irritants found in the air around the areas you work in it is a good idea to wear a dust mask.
