Metal Forming Tools Used By Home Hobbyists

Metal Forming Tools Are Not Just The Province Of Machine Shops

Home hobbyists who enjoy working with metal soon find they need metal forming tools. These tools can be simple hand tools such as files, hammers and vices. More advanced hobbyists quickly graduate to specialized tools such as mills, lathes, shapers and other tools to complete their projects.

A metal shaper works similar to a lathe in that is shaves the metal to a desired shape or thickness, including putting irregularly shaped holes in flat metal stock. Where the lathe turns or spins the work piece into a tool or bit to make rounded shapes, the shaper moves flat stock back and forth into the tool or bit to shave or cut grooves or shapes into the stock.

Shapers Are Indispensable For Flat Stock

Metal shapers are next on the list for those dedicated metal workers who already have lathes and milling machines. These machines are indispensible for certain machining operations on flat stock. They are capable of machining very close tolerances and are especially useful for cutting keyways, rabbets, grooves, dovetails and shaving the thickness of flat stock down to a desired level.

Metal saw blades are used to cut flat and bar stock and pipe to the length or width needed. Metal working machines such as the lathe, mill, shaper and drill press are used to further refine the rough stock into the desired shape and size.

While these machines are more commonly found in machine shops and industrial applications, there are a number of home hobbyists who enjoy working with metal. They equip their personal workshops with these metal forming tools and then get involved with any number of fascinating projects. It is not at all uncommon for a retiree of a machining company or shop to continue a hobby of working with metal and metal forming tools.
