How milling is done in lumber mills

Milling is the tem used to describe the procedure used to saw lumber from the logs that are delivered to the lumber mills. Milling is actually a process of cutting away material from a log by passing it over a multiple tooth cutter called a milling cutter. There are many different cuts that are used in milling to provide different sizes and thicknesses of board.

What is a milling cutter?

A milling cutter is a cutting tool used on a milling machine. Milling cutters are available in standard and specialized types depending on the job they are needed for.

Methods of milling

The milling cutters are the most important machinery used in lumber mills. In addition to the types of cuts that are made by milling cutters, there are also several methods of milling. Some of these methods are:

• Up milling. This is the conventional form of milling in which the direction of the workpiece is opposite to the milling cutter.

• Down milling. This is also called climb milling and refers to having the direction of the milling cutter the same as the workpiece.

Without a milling cutter, lumber mills the world over would not be able to do a proper job of milling.
