Radial Arm Saws Are Versatile Necessity For
Most Woodworkers
Radial arm saws are one of the most versatile
and most important tools in the woodworking shop.
This unique saw design was invented by Raymond
E. Dewalt in 1922 and has been a mainstay for
carpenters and woodworkers ever since. The radial
arm saw operates on an overhead arm and the saw
can be rotated in any direction as well as being
moved forward and backward. These versatile saws
can be used to rip, cross-cut as well as make
miter and rabbet cuts. They can also be used
as routers and shapers with specialized attachments.
One
of the more popular models of power saws in
woodworking shops around the world is the Ryobi
radial arm saw. Ryobi, a Japanese company,
was formed in 1943 to manufacture military
castings. The company, which now makes die
castings, builder’s
hardware, power tools, lawn and garden tools
and printing equipment. The company has been
making power tools, including its radial arm
saws, since 1968.
Radial
Arm Saws Can Double As Miter Saws
A
miter saw is an important tool in any woodworking
shop, but it is not essential in shops with
a radial arm saw. A miter jig can be built
and attached to the saw table, enabling the
radial arm saw to double as a miter saw.
The panel saw is used in specialized woodworking
shops, home improvement stores and manufacturing
facilities. Many building materials such as plywood,
masonile, panel wall covering, dry wall and other
materials are in large sheets or panels. The
panel saw is designed to hold these large sheets
securely as the saw is moved across the material,
making a precise cut. This specialized saw has
limited application other than cutting these
sheets of material.
While radial arm saws are not designed to cut
panels or large sheets, they are very useful
in most other applications. Woodworking and carpentry
shops are not complete without one or more radial
arm saws.
