Overview on the band saw

Choosing the best band saw for you

An overview of the best brands of band saw, and the most popular bandsaw sizes.

The band saw is a must have item in any workshop. The band saw is generally sold in two popular sizes; depending on your needs. The band saw can be found in 7” by 12”, horizontal by vertical and the heavy duty 10” horizontal. The S-712 horizontal bandsaw by Ganesh is a 7”X12” is a very versatile horizontal/vertical combination model. It comes with casters to make it more moveable and a 110volt motor to make it easier for general jobs. The Ganesh also comes with its own cooling system, free band saw blade and hydraulic downfeed.

Any crafts man that uses band saws regularly or plans to, will want the best quality model that they can get. Since band saws are used for many types of projects materials, getting the best one for your needs is very important.

The most popular brand names on the market today are:

Delta, Felker, SawMaster, MK Diamond, and Core Cut. Each brand offers its own unique properties that will make your wood cutting job easier.

Band saws range in price from $300-$3000. What makes the bandsaw so popular is that it can be used to cut wood, fibreglass or metal, and just about anything else as well. The cordless models are more convenient for those that do not have a large enough work space. You should bear in mind that blades vary in size; depending on the size of the wood to be cut. The band saw blade should be one eight of the minimum radius of the wood being cut. For example: if you are cutting a 4” thick piece of wood, you will use a half inch blade.

Band saws come in many sizes for general purposes. They are 14, 16, 18, 20, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches; depending on the wheel diameter. The smallest size is of course, the 14” which is the smallest that can be used for practical purposes. When choosing the right bandsaw for you, it is most important to think of the types of projects that you will be doing. Since most people’s projects change, I would suggest a band saw that is large enough for your biggest projects and work on the blades from there.
