Measuring
Instruments Are Project Essentials
Measuring
instruments and leveling instruments are
vital to every construction, woodworking or
home hobbyist project. These projects simply
cannot be completed without effective measuring
tools. A number of instruments have been developed
to guage, measure and level the work of craftsmen,
hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers. These include
tape measures, yard sticks, calipers, squares,
levels and other instruments.
Among
the most indispensable measuring tools are
tape measures. These instruments are comprised
of a ribbon made of cloth, plastic or metal.
For home hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers is the
retractable metal tape measures. The first tape
measure was invented by Arthur J. Fellows in
1868. Like most other tools invented more than
a century ago, tape measures have come a long
way since Mr. Fellows’ day. Modern tape
measures display the exact distance being measured
in an LDC display on the top of the case. The
tape measure will also hold or store the last
measurement. Some are not tape measures at all
any longer, using laser beams to measure and
record distances.
The
Black And Decker Laser Level Is Also A Measuring
Tool
Another
useful measuring tool is the black and decker
laser level. The laser level has countless
uses around the home or jobsite. These tools
are especially useful for such things as hanging
several pictures in a series, installing cabinets
and bookshelves, hanging wallpaper, building
wooden fences and any number of construction
projects, including building stone walls. These
tools not only provide a level line, but some
models also record the distance of the laser
line.
Other measuring tools include center finding
rules, fiberglass tapes, folding rules, steel
tapes, pocket measures, and measuring wheels.
These tools measure distances up to 100 feet
and more. The more common is the retractable
tape measure that is broken down into 1/8 inche
increments and extends to 25 feet.
Measuring
instruments are essential for any construction,
home project or hobby job. Today’s
sophisticated tools are extremely accurate and
easy to use, giving us great respect for the
ancient Greeks and Egyptians who used a person’s
foot as the standard measurement. Modern construction
is much easier with today’s measuring instruments.
