Carving Wood Blanks Give Carvers The Basic Shape

 
   


Carving wood is the art of creating sculptures, images or designs from wood. Wood carvings have been used for decorations and adornments for centuries. The basic tools of woodcarving as relatively few and simple. They include knives, chisels, files or shapers and drills. In many cases these handtools have also been redesigned as power tools. The reasons for carving wood are many, but there is no doubt that one of the leading reasons is the almost mystical, spiritual quality found in wooden pieces.

Most carvers find it easiest to begin with carving wood blanks. These blanks have been cut from a block of wood into the basic shape of the animal, figure or design that will be carved. Many veteran wood carvers have acquired the tools to create their own blanks. Novice and veteran wood carvers both often find it easier to purchase blanks that have been produced and sold through a wood carving supply house. These blanks are readily available in hobby shops, crafts stores and on dozens of websites. They are usually available anywhere wood carving tools are sold.

Carving Wood Spoons

Carving wood spoons is a popular carving project. These wooden spoons are both useful and decorative. There are literally hundreds of wooden spoon designs. Carved wooden spoons were popular with the Celts in medieval times and continue to be popular with the Welsh and Irish yet today. Gourmet cooks often prefer to prepare many dishes with wooden spoons and carved spoons make excellent gifts.

Commercial wood carving, especially for items such as gun stocks and other mass produced items of similar or identical design are often carved using a wood carving machine. These machines can operate using a computer program or model and carve multiple identical pieces at the same time.

There is a magical quality that comes from carving wood. Each piece of wood is different. Veteran wood carvers often say it is as if each piece contains its own unique personality and hidden figure. It is the task of the wood carver to find that particular shape. Whether it is as a business or a pleasurable hobby, there is a special satisfaction that comes from carving wood.
