Wood Carving Tools

Wood carving is a skill that not very many people can do really well. It is something that takes years of practice and those who can do it love to work with their hands. Some wood carving deals with carving figures of birds or animals, while others deal with circumstances of people. Wood carving is a wonderful hobby and one that your can make a lot of money doing.

Getting Started in Wood Carving

To get started with wood carving you don’t need to go out and buy a lot of woodcarving tools. You will need to start with a large shallow gouge. This is a chisel that lets you take the wood off very quickly and get to the shape you wan the wood to take. As you get farther along with the art, you will need wood carving knives (both straight and curved), picks and different shaped gouges.

You must always keep your wood carving tools sharp and in good condition. You can see a grinder or a stone for this and it should be done throughout the wood carving process.

What to use as wood for carving

You should never start your wood carving on just nay old piece of wood. Your first wood for carving should be softwood, such as Basswood, Butternut or Tupelo. If you don’t intend to paint your first wood carving project, then Butternut is the best choice of wood for carving. Small pieces of wood are not expensive, so it is best to buy your first pieces until you get to the right kinds of wood to use. You may think that it would be easy just to cut a piece of wood from any tree, but the wood you choose may have rot or worms that will destroy your wood carving effect.
