The Lathe Is An Ancient Tool

The Lathe Has Been An Important Tool For Centuries. The lathe has been around since the ancient Egyptians used a simple man-powered lathe to cut designs and shapes into wood. Operating these ancient lathes was a two-man task. One man used the cutting tool to carve or shape the rotating piece of wood. The other turned the wood by using a bow and a piece of string or rope.

The lathe is a simple machine that has been continually refined over the centuries. Lathe parts have become specialized for various wood turning and metalworking tasks and stock. Today’s lathes are computer controlled precision machines with scant resemblance to most of its early predecessors.

A Woodworking Lathe Is Central To DIY Workshop

The wood turning lathe is the heart of most DIY and commercial woodworking workshops. These machines are available in a variety of sizes, from tiny pen lathes that have a maximum capacity of 2” stock to much larger lathes than can turn stock as large as 10” or 12”. The large lathes are used to turn items such as bowls and vases.
