Using a CNC Lathe

A cnc lathe is just what you need to make new spindles for the stair rails. Although a woodworking cnc lathe is mainly used for wood, you can also use it for putting designs in other materials as well. A computer numerical controlled wood lathe can be used for nearly all types of wood, aluminum and brass. The lathe spindle is usually held by tapered roller bearings. With anti-backlash screws on both axes and a fully encapsulated motor mechanism the machines are widely protected from the dust.

Uses Of A Woodworking Lathe

metal-lathe-a-A traditional metalworking cnc lathe (called milling machine) can be used to cut metal. For example, it can be used to produce screw threads, do tapered work, drill holes, as well as many other jobs. In addition there are various sizes of cnc wood lathes. Smaller models can be mounted on a bench and are semi-portable. Larger models stand on the floor and require special transportation if they are to be moved. The serious woodworker usually has a lathe in the workshop for making the various designs needed to give a finished look to any woodworking project, such as table legs or stair railings.

Safety Measures For Using CNC Lathes

When using a cnc lathe, all rings and watches should be removed and sleeves should be rolled above the elbows. The lathe should always be stopped before making any adjustments and before changing the speed of the spindles. Eye-wear protection such as goggles should be worn when using cnc woodworking lathes. Whenever you programmed the software new, have a dry test run on your machine, in order to see if the movement of the turning head is as expected.

The cnc lathe cutting tool must be made of the correct material to do the work efficiently. The most common tool is an all-purpose bit made of high speed steel. This material is easy to grind down and not as expensive as other bits, which tend to break easily. One must be skilled with using a lathe in order to be able to do all of the necessary cuts. However, recent technological advancements have made this job easier with computer models that you can program to get just the right design.
