Power Tools

Choosing the right Power tools

power-tools-festoIn every workshop you have your power tools. One of these you will use more often than others, some you will like more than others. In the following I would like to give you an overview about tools and what makes them so special. Power tools are the base of every woodworking workshop. The huge variety of machines makes it very difficult to keep an overview on what tool is really needed. Here are the tools I use in my woodworking shop:

Drills

A basic corded drill is the starting point for every woodworker. It should have R/L switch, a 1/2" (13 mm) chuck and at least 5.5 Amps (650 Watts). I worked with several power tools and liked these DeWalt and the Makita best.

Cordless Drills

Over the past 20 years the cordless power tool market exploded. Whilst at the beginning heavy and with little power, cordless power tools are nowadays a must for every workshop.

I own a variety of cordless drills ("collected over the past years"), but using them it comes down to two cordless drills.

A 12 Volt DeWalt Cordless Drill - which I bought some moths ago - and has a sheer endless power out of his NicH batteries and a light 7,2 Volts Makita Drill which I have in my tool box, just in case I need to do some quick repair work around our house.

Jig Saw

Having worn out many different jig saws in the past, I stick with a Bosch jig saw. It is one of the most powerful tools compared to its motor size. Easy to handle and equipped with a fast blade changing mechanism - it is a must in every woodworking workshop.

Power Tools Safety

Whatever type of power tool you are using for keep in mind safety and protection. Always read the safety instructions and the instruction manual that come with your machine. Wear adequated ear and sight protection with every type of machine. Make sure that a well functioning dust extraction system is attached to your machinery. Do not take drugs, medication or alcohol before or whilst working with tools. This way your should enjoy the work with power tools.
